Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Purdue better for graduate school reputation?

UIUC has a slight edge for overall graduate-school reputation. Across academia and research-heavy fields, Illinois is especially well known for the breadth of its graduate programs, its major research output, and its long-standing strength across engineering, computer science, the physical sciences, and several social science areas.

One concrete difference is faculty and research ecosystem. UIUC is widely seen as one of the country’s most established public research universities, and that matters when graduate admissions committees recognize labs, departments, and letter writers.
