The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UNC has a more traditional, campus-centered undergraduate social life, while Columbia’s social scene is shaped much more by New York City and by students dispersing beyond campus. At UNC, a lot of student life revolves around a defined college town, school spirit, and a visible campus community. At Columbia, undergrads still build strong friendships and communities, but the social rhythm is less unified and often more independent, because the city itself is part of daily life.

UNC tends to feel more collective. Big-time athletics, tailgates, Greek life, Franklin Street, and the fact that so many students live and socialize in the same orbit give it a more classic residential college atmosphere. Day to day, that can mean it is easier to stumble into social activity, see the same people often, and feel a stronger sense of shared campus culture.

Columbia is social in a different way. Students often split their time among campus clubs, residence halls, nearby restaurants and cafes, internships, performances, and the wider city. That creates a lot of opportunity, but it can also make social life feel more self-directed. There is campus community, especially through student organizations, house communities, and traditions, but it usually does not have the same all-campus, school-spirit-driven feel that UNC has.

Another difference is pace. Columbia can feel more intense and compressed, with students balancing demanding academics and the constant pull of New York. UNC usually comes across as more relaxed socially, even though students are still ambitious. The social energy at UNC is often more visible and public, while at Columbia it can be more fragmented into smaller circles.

For an undergraduate trying to picture daily life, UNC usually offers the clearer "college campus" experience, and Columbia offers a more urban, outward-facing version of college life. Neither is better in the abstract, but if what you want is a strong shared campus vibe, UNC is more likely to feel that way.
