Is Northwestern or UCLA better for sociology majors?

Northwestern has the edge for sociology if you are comparing the major itself, especially for a smaller, more theory-driven department with a very strong research reputation. Its sociology department is widely respected, the program tends to be more intimate, and undergraduates often benefit from closer access to faculty and seminars. UCLA is also excellent, but its scale and structure can make the experience feel more like being in a large public research university.

Another difference is the academic style of the program. Northwestern is especially well known for sociological theory, qualitative research, and a very academically focused department culture. If you are interested in graduate school, writing-intensive classes, or working closely with scholars on research projects, that environment is especially appealing.

UCLA offers more breadth in the sense of a huge campus, a large social sciences ecosystem, and strong connections to urban issues in Los Angeles. For sociology topics like inequality, immigration, race, labor, education, and public policy, UCLA gives you access to a remarkable real-world setting. The tradeoff is that intro and required courses can be larger, and navigating the department may take more initiative.

For the sociology major alone, Northwestern stands out a bit more because of the department’s reputation and the undergraduate academic experience within it. UCLA remains a top option, especially if you want a large public university environment and the sociological lab that Los Angeles naturally provides.
