Which is better for student life: UCLA or Arizona State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UCLA offers a more traditional, residential campus experience in a dense part of Los Angeles, while Arizona State offers a bigger, more spread-out social scene built around Tempe’s easygoing, active, and very accessible college-town feel. UCLA tends to feel more self-contained and school-centered, especially around the Hill, athletics, and Westwood. ASU usually feels easier to plug into quickly because the campus is larger, the vibe is less intense, and student life extends naturally into the surrounding Tempe area.

For day-to-day student life, ASU is often the easier place to have a socially active experience. There are tons of clubs, big campus events, Greek life is more visible, and the overall atmosphere is usually less pressured. The weather also shapes campus life a lot, with students out and about for much of the year, and Tempe is built around students in a way that makes casual hangouts, off-campus food, and spontaneous plans feel very natural.

UCLA has an excellent student life too, but it can feel a little different. The campus is beautiful, school spirit is strong, and there is a lot happening, from performances to clubs to major athletic events. At the same time, UCLA students often describe the social environment as more driven and busier, so making friends is very doable, but staying involved can take more intentional effort because people are juggling a lot and Los Angeles can pull students in many directions.

If your definition of the best student life is high energy, easy social access, and a classic big-campus atmosphere where it is hard not to find something going on, Arizona State has the edge. If you want a more traditional residential campus with strong school identity and the added benefit of being at UCLA in LA, then UCLA can be the more rewarding experience.
