Which is better for undergraduate teaching: UCLA or Swarthmore?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. UCLA gives you the resources, course variety, and energy of a major research university, while Swarthmore is built much more intentionally around small, discussion-heavy undergraduate teaching and close faculty access. If the question is specifically about classroom experience and professor attention, Swarthmore usually has the edge because undergraduates are the clear center of the academic model.

At Swarthmore, nearly all students are undergrads, so classes are typically smaller and professors are teaching with undergraduates in mind from the start. Office-hour access, seminar discussion, detailed feedback on writing, and sustained relationships with faculty are a core part of the experience rather than something you have to work harder to find. That structure tends to matter a lot if you want to be known well by your professors.

UCLA absolutely has excellent teaching, and many students build strong relationships with faculty there, especially once they move into upper-division classes, honors programs, research groups, or smaller departmental communities. But at a place that large, intro courses can be much bigger, graduate students may handle some discussion sections, and students often need to be more proactive about seeking out individual attention. The upside is that UCLA offers enormous academic breadth, more specialized departments, and the ecosystem of a top research university.

So for undergraduate teaching in the narrow sense of class size, faculty accessibility, and a learning environment designed around undergrads, Swarthmore is the stronger pick. UCLA can still be a great academic experience, but it usually rewards students who are comfortable navigating a larger system and creating that closeness for themselves.
