Is Notre Dame or UVA better for undergraduate teaching?

Notre Dame has the edge for undergraduate teaching. It is built much more explicitly around the undergraduate experience, with a stronger emphasis on faculty-student interaction, smaller learning environments outside the biggest intro courses, and a campus culture where teaching is a central part of the school’s identity. UVA offers excellent professors too, but as a larger public university, the classroom experience can feel less consistently personal across departments.

One concrete difference is scale. Notre Dame is smaller and more residential, which usually makes it easier to build real relationships with professors and see them repeatedly across classes, office hours, and campus events. At UVA, you can absolutely find close faculty mentorship, especially once you get into your major, but the size of the university means introductory courses and advising can feel more variable.

Another difference is institutional focus. Notre Dame puts a lot of weight on undergraduate formation, not just research output, and that tends to show up in how accessible faculty feel and how invested departments are in teaching undergrads well. UVA has many outstanding teachers, especially in the humanities and social sciences, but the experience depends more on the specific school, major, and how quickly you move past larger lecture settings.

The student support piece also leans toward Notre Dame. Its campus structure and tighter-knit community often make it easier for students to get academic support, recommendations, research guidance, and informal mentoring without having to push as hard to stand out. UVA can deliver that too, but students often need to be more proactive navigating a bigger system.
