University of Washington vs UC Santa Barbara for internships: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus campus recruiting style: University of Washington benefits a lot from being in Seattle, where students are close to a major tech hub, while UC Santa Barbara offers strong opportunities too but often requires more deliberate networking and travel for the same density of tech internships. For tech or related fields, UW usually has the more immediate internship advantage because companies can recruit locally, host events nearby, and hire students during the school year more easily. UCSB students absolutely land strong internships, especially in engineering and computing, but the ecosystem is less concentrated right outside campus.

UW’s location matters a lot. Being in Seattle means easier access to part-time roles, academic-year internships, company events, alumni connections, and a broader range of startups and established tech employers. That can make the internship search feel more continuous rather than something focused mainly on summer.

UCSB has real strengths, especially in engineering, computer science, and adjacent technical areas, and California gives students access to major industries. But Santa Barbara itself is a smaller market, so students often rely more on traveling for interviews, targeting summer roles elsewhere in California, or building connections through clubs, faculty, and alumni rather than sheer local company volume.

Recruiting culture also feels a bit different. At UW, the school’s scale, location, and employer familiarity can create a steadier flow of tech-facing opportunities. At UCSB, students who are proactive can still do extremely well, but the process may depend more on individual initiative than on being embedded next to a large city tech network.

If internships in tech are one of the top deciding factors, I’d lean toward University of Washington. UCSB is still a very solid option, but UW tends to offer the more convenient and consistently accessible path to tech recruiting and internships.
