For graduate school preparation, Caltech usually gives you the cleaner path to a top PhD application, especially if you want close access to faculty, intensive undergraduate research, and very personalized recommendation letters. Its small size means undergrads are a central part of the academic community, and research participation tends to start early and feel built into the culture. Berkeley can absolutely get students into elite PhD programs too, but the path is often more self-directed because the university is much larger and the competition for attention can be higher.

The biggest difference is faculty access. At Caltech, professors oversee a smaller undergraduate population, so it is easier to become known well enough for detailed letters that speak to your research ability rather than just your grades. For PhD admissions, that kind of letter matters a lot. At Berkeley, there are world-class faculty in nearly every field, but students often need to be more proactive to stand out in large departments and lecture courses.
