Is Yale or Notre Dame better for accounting?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list and I want to study accounting or possibly go into public accounting after graduation. Yale and Notre Dame both seem strong overall, but I’m not sure which one is the better choice specifically for accounting and related recruiting.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the stronger path for someone who wants to build a career in accounting.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Notre Dame gives you a much more direct, structured path into accounting, while Yale gives you broader prestige and flexibility but not the same dedicated undergraduate accounting pipeline. Notre Dame has an actual Mendoza accounting curriculum, strong ties to public accounting firms, and a well-established recruiting culture for business careers. Yale is excellent overall, but it does not have an undergraduate business school or a traditional accounting major, so the route is less straightforward if accounting is your clear goal.

For public accounting, Notre Dame is the more natural fit. The Mendoza College of Business is specifically built for students pursuing accounting, finance, consulting, and related fields, and firms that hire accounting majors know exactly what they are getting from that program. That matters for internships, CPA-track coursework, and early professional networking.

At Yale, you would likely study economics or another related field and piece together accounting preparation through electives or later graduate study. That can still work, especially if your interests may shift toward finance, law, policy, or general management, but it is not the same as being in a school where accounting is already a core undergraduate pathway. For someone who already thinks public accounting is a likely destination, that difference is important.

Another factor is campus career culture. Notre Dame tends to be more pre-professional in a very organized way for business students, and its alumni network is known for being especially engaged. Yale’s network is obviously powerful too, but for accounting specifically, Notre Dame is more purpose-built.

So if the question is narrowly about accounting and the cleanest route into public accounting, Notre Dame has the edge. Yale becomes more compelling if you want maximum academic flexibility and are not fully committed to accounting itself.
