Yale probably has the edge if by “more fun” you mean a bigger, busier undergraduate social scene with more variety built into daily life. Its residential college system creates strong small communities, but you also get the energy of a larger university, a dense extracurricular culture, and immediate access to New Haven’s restaurants, music, and student events. Rice is often described as very happy and close-knit, but the social atmosphere is usually more relaxed and lower-key than Yale.

One big difference is scale and pace. Yale has more students, more clubs, more performances, more talks, and more campus traditions happening at once, so it can feel livelier from week to week. There is a lot of undergraduate spirit around residential colleges, student groups, campus arts, and informal social events, which gives students several different ways to plug in.

Rice stands out for community in a slightly different way. Its residential college system is also central to student life, and students often seem deeply attached to their college culture, traditions, and intramural scene. That can make everyday life feel warm, supportive, and genuinely enjoyable, but it is often less outwardly intense and less socially varied than Yale.

The setting also changes the feel. Yale sits in a more urban environment, so students have easier access to off-campus food, nightlife, and cultural options. Rice is in Houston, which is a major city, but the campus itself tends to feel more self-contained, and students often talk about the fun coming from campus traditions and friend groups rather than a constantly buzzing surrounding scene.

In terms of student happiness, Rice has a particularly strong reputation for friendliness and balance, while Yale can be more energizing and expansive day to day. Yale is more likely to deliver that bigger mix of activity and excitement.
