Which is better for economics: University of Washington or UPenn?

UPenn is the stronger option for economics. Its economics department has deeper visibility in the field, closer ties to finance and policy employers, and easier access to economics-related opportunities through the broader Penn ecosystem, especially Wharton, the College of Arts and Sciences, and research centers tied to business and public policy.

One major difference is the academic environment around economics itself. At Penn, economics students are surrounded by a very active undergraduate culture in finance, consulting, public policy, and quantitative social science, which tends to create more structured pathways into internships, faculty research, and advanced coursework. For a student thinking seriously about graduate school, Penn also offers a stronger concentration of peers aiming for PhD-level work.

Another differentiator is location and recruiting. Penn’s Philadelphia location places students close to New York, Washington, and a dense East Coast employer network, which matters for internships during the school year as well as alumni access.

UW still has real strengths. It is an excellent university with a respected economics department, strong quantitative training, and useful connections to the Seattle economy, including tech and public-sector opportunities. If cost is dramatically lower or you want to build toward tech economics, data analysis, or a Pacific Northwest career, UW can be a very smart choice. But on pure economics program strength, national placement, and infrastructure for internships or grad-school preparation, Penn has the clearer edge.
