USC vs UC Davis for agricultural science: which is the better choice?

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialization versus overall prestige: UC Davis is one of the most established agriculture schools in the country, while USC is a highly respected university but not a place people choose for agricultural science. For this field, Davis has the academic depth, research infrastructure, faculty focus, and industry connections that matter most. USC’s reputation is strong overall, but it does not have the same agriculture-specific ecosystem.

If you want to study agricultural science, UC Davis is the much stronger choice. Its College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is built around exactly this area, with programs tied to plant science, animal science, sustainability, food systems, environmental work, and California agriculture. Davis also benefits from its location in an agricultural region, which translates into internships, field research, extension work, and closer ties to employers in agriculture and related industries.

USC can be excellent for many majors, especially in business, media, engineering, and some health-related paths, but it is not known as a destination for agricultural science. That matters because in agriculture, the value of your program often comes from very practical things: access to labs, farms, field stations, applied research, and professors whose work is directly connected to the industry. Davis is simply on another level there.

Career-wise, UC Davis gives you a clearer runway into agriculture, agribusiness, environmental agriculture, policy, research, and graduate study in the field. If your interest is truly agricultural science and not just a loosely related area, Davis is the school that lines up with your goals far better.

USC would only make more sense if you were drifting away from agriculture and wanted a very different academic path with more emphasis outside this field. For agricultural science itself, UC Davis is the better choice by a wide margin.
