How difficult is it to get into USC compared with Stanford?

Stanford is meaningfully harder to get into than USC. Both are highly selective and should be treated as reaches for most applicants, but Stanford sits in a different tier of admissions difficulty because it rejects an even larger share of very strong students, including applicants with top grades, rigorous coursework, and standout extracurriculars.

For a student building a realistic college list, USC is the kind of school where exceptional academics and a strong overall profile can at least put you in the conversation, even though admission is still far from predictable. USC also admits by school and major in some cases, so selectivity can feel different depending on what you apply for, but overall it is still a very tough private university with a large, competitive applicant pool.

Stanford is the kind of place where there is almost no such thing as a safe academic profile. Perfect or near-perfect numbers do not make someone likely to get in, and the bar for distinction is unusually high across academics, impact, initiative, and personal qualities. In practice, many students who would be highly competitive at USC are still long shots at Stanford.
