Which is better for film, Northeastern or Loyola Marymount University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus flexibility. Loyola Marymount puts you in Los Angeles, very close to the entertainment industry, and its School of Film and Television is one of the university’s signature programs. Northeastern gives you a broader university structure with strong experiential learning through co-ops, but film is not the school’s defining academic identity in the same way.

For film specifically, LMU is usually the more established and better-known option. Its film program has a stronger industry reputation, more direct proximity to studios, production companies, and alumni working in entertainment, and a campus culture where film is a central draw for many students. If your goal is to build a network in filmmaking, screenwriting, production, or entertainment media while in school, that matters a lot.

Northeastern does offer real advantages. The co-op model can be excellent for gaining hands-on experience, and being in Boston gives access to media, communications, and creative work across several industries. If you are interested in combining film with business, communications, journalism, digital media, or a less narrowly industry-focused path, Northeastern can be appealing because it tends to support interdisciplinary planning very well.

But if you are asking which school is stronger for film overall, LMU has the clearer edge. It is more directly built for students who want serious film training plus day-to-day closeness to the industry. Northeastern can still work, especially for someone who values co-op structure and a broader professional setup, but LMU is the one more people would identify first as a film destination.
