For computer science prestige, is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or MIT considered stronger?

MIT is considered stronger for computer science prestige. In the CS field, MIT has broader name recognition across academia, top tech employers, startups, and international circles, and its computer science reputation is tied closely to EECS, AI, systems, theory, and entrepreneurship in a way very few schools match.

That said, UIUC is absolutely elite in computer science and is one of the handful of programs that engineers and recruiters consistently take very seriously. Within tech, especially among people who know engineering schools well, a UIUC CS degree carries real weight and is not viewed as a fallback or second-tier option.

The biggest difference is that MIT combines top-tier CS standing with a level of overall institutional prestige that travels more universally, even outside tech.

With employers specifically, both schools open doors, but MIT tends to carry more immediate signaling power at first glance. UIUC still performs extremely well with technical employers because its CS program is known for rigor, strong alumni presence in tech, and a long track record of producing excellent engineers.

So for pure CS prestige, MIT has the stronger brand. For actual credibility inside the computer science community, though, UIUC is still near the top and close enough that your internships, projects, research, and interview performance will matter more than the gap in name alone.
