Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or CU Boulder better for weather?

For most students, CU Boulder is the more comfortable place to live weather-wise over the school year. Boulder gets a lot more sunshine, has a drier climate, and usually feels less gloomy than central Illinois. UIUC has more humidity, more gray stretches, and a winter that can feel raw because of wind and damp cold.

CU Boulder tends to suit someone who likes crisp air, sunny days, and a climate that changes fast but often clears up quickly. Even when it snows, Boulder often gets sun soon after, which many students find makes winter easier to handle. The tradeoff is that Boulder’s weather can be less predictable day to day, and the altitude means the sun feels stronger while the air feels much drier.

UIUC fits someone who does not mind a more classic Midwestern pattern with humid summers, chilly late fall, and long stretches of overcast weather in winter. The cold there is not just about temperature. Wind across a flat campus and dampness can make it feel harsher than the number on the forecast suggests. In spring and fall, Illinois can be pleasant, but those seasons can also swing between very nice and pretty messy.

If weather is one of your biggest quality-of-life factors, Boulder usually wins on day-to-day comfort for students who value sun and dry air. Illinois can still be manageable, but people who are sensitive to gray skies, humidity, or slushy winter conditions often notice the difference pretty quickly.
