Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or USC worth the cost for undergrad?
I’m trying to decide between UIUC and USC, and the price difference is pretty big for my family. I know both are strong schools, but I’m not sure how to think about whether the extra money for USC is actually worth it.
I’m mostly asking about the overall value of the degree after graduation, not just campus life or rankings.

For undergrad, UIUC is usually the better value unless USC is close in price for your family or offers something very specific that UIUC does not for your intended field. UIUC has an excellent academic reputation, especially in engineering, computer science, business, and other technical areas, and employers know it well. USC can be worth the extra cost in some cases, but a large price gap is hard to justify on degree value alone.
The biggest differentiator is return on investment by major. If you are going into engineering, CS, data science, accounting, finance, or another field where UIUC is especially strong, the cheaper option often makes more financial sense because the school already has national credibility and strong recruiting. In those areas, paying much more for USC usually does not create a proportionally bigger career outcome right after graduation.
USC’s strongest argument is access to certain networks, especially in Southern California and in industries where location and relationships matter a lot, such as entertainment, media, some business paths, and parts of entrepreneurship. USC’s alumni network is very active, and being in Los Angeles can open doors during the school year in ways that are harder to replicate from Urbana-Champaign. That advantage is real, but it matters most when it directly matches your goals.
The financial tradeoff matters more than people sometimes admit. If choosing USC would require significant loans or put real pressure on your family, the long-term value often swings toward UIUC because lower debt gives you more freedom after graduation. That is especially true if you may later want grad school, move to a high-cost city, or take a lower-paying first job for experience.
What I would focus on is whether USC gives you access to a specific pipeline that UIUC cannot. If the answer is no, UIUC is probably the smarter investment.
