Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State harder to get into for college admissions?

UIUC is typically harder to get into than Ohio State, especially if you are applying from out of state. UIUC tends to have a more selective admissions profile across the university, and it can become much tougher in certain colleges even if you are only asking about the school as a whole. Ohio State is still selective, but in broad university-wide admissions it is usually a bit more accessible.

For a student comparing general odds, UIUC is the place to treat as the bigger reach. That is partly because UIUC admits by college in many cases, so the level of competition can vary more depending on where you apply, and the overall applicant pool is very strong. Ohio State’s process is also competitive, but it is often less intense at the overall university level than UIUC’s.

Residency matters too. Both schools are public flagships and give an advantage to in-state applicants, but UIUC can feel especially tough for non-Illinois students because it attracts a large national and international applicant pool. Ohio State also draws many out-of-state applicants, yet it is usually viewed as somewhat less difficult to enter overall.

So if you are building a college list based only on admissions difficulty, UIUC belongs a notch above Ohio State in selectivity. I would think of Ohio State as the less difficult admit of the two in most general admissions comparisons, while remembering that particular majors at either school can change the picture a lot.
