Is Miami or Florida better for finance careers and internships?

Miami is the stronger place for finance careers and internships. The biggest reason is proximity: the University of Miami sits in a major financial hub with far more nearby firms in private wealth, real estate finance, private equity, international banking, and family office work than most Florida college locations. That makes in-semester internships, coffee chats, and alumni networking much easier to do regularly instead of only during the summer.

Miami also benefits from the city’s role as a gateway to Latin America. That creates a noticeable concentration of cross-border banking, asset management, and corporate finance activity, plus demand for students who can work in bilingual or international business settings. For finance, especially wealth management and real estate-related paths, that local ecosystem matters a lot.

Florida’s flagship public universities can still place very well into finance, especially for students who are proactive and target larger employers through campus recruiting. The limitation is geographic: Gainesville is not a major finance center, so internships during the school year are less convenient and networking often depends more on formal recruiting pipelines, treks, and travel.

If your priority is having the most direct access to firms while you are in school, Miami has the edge.
