University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Stony Brook University for computer science: which is better?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list for computer science and these two schools keep coming up. I know both have strong CS programs, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered the better choice overall for a CS major.

I’m mainly looking at the reputation of the program and how it’s viewed by employers or grad schools.

For computer science, UIUC is more widely viewed as the stronger program overall. Its CS department has a bigger national reputation, deeper recruiting pipeline, and more visibility with top tech employers and graduate programs. If your question is mainly about prestige and how the degree is perceived at a broad national level, UIUC usually has the edge.

UIUC tends to fit the student who wants to be surrounded by a very large, intensely tech-focused CS community. The department is known for high-level research, strong faculty, a wide range of advanced coursework, and a campus culture where computing is a major presence. That can translate into more specialized class options, more research labs, and a stronger alumni network in CS-heavy industries.

Stony Brook makes sense for a student who wants a respected CS education with especially strong access to the New York region. Employers and grad schools do take Stony Brook seriously, and it has a solid technical reputation, particularly in the Northeast. It can be a very smart choice for someone prioritizing value, proximity to NYC opportunities, or a somewhat less nationally hyped environment while still getting a legitimate CS education.

In employer terms, both can lead to strong outcomes, but UIUC carries more instant name recognition in CS circles across the country. For grad school, both can work if you build a strong record, but UIUC’s research footprint and overall stature in computer science give it an advantage. So if you are asking which school is more broadly considered better for CS reputation alone, the answer is UIUC, while Stony Brook remains a strong option for students whose priorities line up with its location and value.
