University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs UC San Diego reputation: which is more respected?

If someone asked me how they are viewed in a simple way, I’d say UIUC may get a slight edge in traditional engineering prestige, while UC San Diego may have broader cachet in life sciences and coastal research circles. Outside of field-specific differences, they are close enough that reputation alone usually should not decide it. The more useful question is which school is more respected in the exact area you want to study and work in.
