University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Purdue campus vibe: how do they compare?

The biggest practical difference is that UIUC feels more like a classic Big Ten college town with a livelier social scene woven into the surrounding area, while Purdue often feels more academically intense and a bit more self-contained around engineering and STEM culture. At Illinois, Champaign-Urbana gives the campus a busier, more blended town-and-gown feel, with more off-campus food, events, and movement around Green Street and the two downtown areas. Purdue in West Lafayette still has plenty happening, but the atmosphere is often described as more focused, more orderly, and a little less socially expansive day to day.

For social life, both are big public universities with Greek life, clubs, sports, and lots of student activity, so neither is quiet. UIUC tends to come across as more outwardly social and spirited in a broad campus-wide way, partly because the campus is spread through an active college-town environment and partly because there is a strong mix of majors and scenes.
