Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or the University of Michigan better for campus size and walkability?

For campus size and walkability, the University of Michigan has the edge if you want a place that feels easier to navigate on foot day to day. Its main undergraduate areas are concentrated in Ann Arbor, and even though Michigan is spread across Central, North, Medical, and Athletic campuses, most students can do a lot of their routine on Central Campus without needing to go far. Ann Arbor is also tightly woven into the campus, so walking between class, food, libraries, and downtown spots feels natural.

At UIUC, the campus is large, flat, and very walkable in the sense that you can get around on foot, but it often feels more sprawling. The university stretches across both Urbana and Champaign, and students commonly rely on bikes or the bus system for convenience, especially when moving between residence halls, engineering buildings, and other farther corners of campus. It is manageable, but less compact in feel than Michigan.

Another difference is how the surrounding town works with the campus. Michigan benefits from having a denser college-town layout, where campus and downtown Ann Arbor blend together. That makes everyday walking feel simpler and more connected. UIUC has a strong campus environment too, but the two-city layout creates more distance between some student destinations.

Terrain is worth mentioning too. UIUC is flatter, which makes walking physically easier, while Michigan has more hills and a bit more variation in elevation.
