Georgia Tech vs UC Berkeley for computer engineering: which is better for undergrad?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list for computer engineering, and these two schools keep coming up. Both seem strong for academics and recruiting, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered the better choice for an undergrad CE major.

I’m mostly looking for a clear comparison based on the overall undergraduate experience in computer engineering.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure versus flexibility. Georgia Tech tends to offer a more engineering-centered undergraduate experience with a very focused, hands-on culture, while UC Berkeley gives you access to a broader university ecosystem and enormous tech-industry proximity, but often with a larger, less personal feel. For computer engineering specifically, both are highly respected, and neither will limit you academically or professionally.

At Georgia Tech, computer engineering sits in a school where engineering is the core identity of the campus. That usually translates into a very strong peer culture around building, design, labs, and recruiting, and many students like how clearly the program is organized for undergrads. Advising and course planning can still be imperfect, but the undergraduate experience is often seen as more intentionally centered on engineers rather than engineers being one major among many in a huge university.

At Berkeley, the upside is scale, prestige in both EECS-related areas and adjacent fields, and unmatched access to research, startups, and Bay Area networking. The Berkeley name carries exceptional weight in tech, and the academic depth is outstanding. The tradeoff is that undergrads can run into larger classes, more competition for certain opportunities, and a campus environment that can feel less streamlined.

For computer engineering alone, I would give Georgia Tech a slight edge on the day-to-day undergraduate experience and Berkeley a slight edge on breadth of opportunity and ecosystem. If the question is which is better in the abstract, Berkeley probably has the stronger overall brand in computing circles, but not by enough to override fit or cost.

If both were affordable and equally appealing personally, I’d lean Georgia Tech for a cleaner, more undergrad-focused computer engineering experience. I’d lean Berkeley only if you especially value the Bay Area environment, want maximum flexibility across computing and adjacent disciplines, or are energized by a bigger, more open-ended academic setting.
