University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs CU Boulder for computer engineering: which is better for undergraduates?

I’m a high school senior trying to compare these two schools for computer engineering. I’m mainly looking at the overall undergrad experience, like program strength, internship opportunities, and how well each school prepares students for jobs or grad school.

Both are on my list, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is the stronger choice specifically for computer engineering.

For computer engineering specifically, UIUC has the stronger undergraduate reputation and deeper recruiting pipeline. Its Grainger College of Engineering is especially well known in computing and engineering, the ECE department is large and established, and employers in hardware, embedded systems, systems software, chips, and related fields recruit there very heavily. If your main goal is maximum academic depth and broad name recognition in computer engineering, UIUC is the tougher option to beat.

UIUC tends to fit the student who wants a high-powered engineering environment with a lot of technical intensity around them. You would be surrounded by many peers aiming for demanding internships, research, and advanced coursework, and the department offers a wide range of classes and labs that matter for computer engineering, not just general CS. That can be a big advantage if you want flexibility across electronics, computer architecture, firmware, robotics, or semiconductors, or if you may consider grad school later.

CU Boulder makes more sense for the student who wants a very solid engineering education in a place that can feel a bit less pressure-cooker than UIUC while still offering real access to tech opportunities. Boulder benefits from its location near a strong engineering and startup corridor, and students can connect with aerospace, embedded systems, telecom, and software-adjacent employers in Colorado. For some students, that mix of good academics, outdoor culture, and a more balanced day-to-day experience is genuinely the better undergraduate fit.

On career preparation, both can get you to strong internships and jobs, but UIUC usually gives you a wider national recruiting reach in computer engineering. Its alumni network and employer visibility are especially strong for big tech, hardware companies, and top grad programs. CU Boulder can absolutely place students well, especially those who are proactive, but the path may rely a bit more on taking initiative with networking, projects, and local industry connections.

If cost is close and you are choosing strictly on undergraduate computer engineering strength, I would lean UIUC. CU Boulder is still a good option, but UIUC is the one more likely to open doors across the full range of computer engineering paths.
