Which is better for biomedical engineering: Johns Hopkins or Princeton?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing Johns Hopkins and Princeton come up for biomedical engineering. Both seem strong academically, but I’m not sure how they compare for BME specifically.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally the stronger choice if I want a serious biomedical engineering program and good opportunities in the field.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth of biomedical engineering infrastructure versus the broader flexibility and undergraduate experience of a top liberal arts-focused research university. Johns Hopkins is unusually embedded in medicine and biomedical research, with direct proximity to the School of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a university culture where BME is one of the flagship strengths. Princeton has excellent engineering and very strong science training, but its biomedical engineering ecosystem is smaller and less central to the university’s identity than it is at Hopkins.

The engineering school is smaller, which can mean close mentorship and less competition for some opportunities. Princeton can be especially appealing if your interests lean more theoretical, quantitative, or interdisciplinary across engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, and molecular biology rather than toward a heavily medical-campus-centered BME experience.

Career-wise, both schools open excellent doors for grad school, med school, biotech, and research. But for someone asking purely which school is stronger in biomedical engineering as a field, the answer is Johns Hopkins. Princeton is outstanding overall; Hopkins is the one more directly associated with biomedical engineering excellence and the surrounding ecosystem that supports it.
