Is William & Mary or UMass Amherst more fun for undergraduates?

UMass Amherst is more fun for most undergraduates if by fun you mean a bigger, more active social scene and more going on day to day. It has the energy of a large flagship campus, a much broader mix of student events, clubs, athletics, and nearby student life in Amherst and the Five College area. William & Mary is social too, but the vibe is smaller, calmer, and more centered on close-knit campus traditions than on constant activity.

One big difference is scale. UMass has the feel of a major public university, so there are simply more people, more organizations, more events, and more chances that something is happening on a random weeknight or weekend. Big-time school spirit around sports, larger student programming, and the presence of nearby campuses all add to that sense that the social options are plentiful.

William & Mary’s appeal is more intimate. Students often describe it as community-oriented, quirky, and tradition-heavy, with social life built around clubs, residence hall communities, performances, campus events, and smaller gatherings rather than a huge party atmosphere. Williamsburg is charming and historic, but it is not going to feel as busy or student-saturated as the UMass setting.

The surrounding environment matters too. UMass students benefit from both a college town and the Five College Consortium, which expands the cultural and social scene beyond one campus. At William & Mary, the undergraduate experience tends to feel more self-contained, which some students love because it creates a tighter campus identity, but it usually means fewer off-campus options in everyday life.

If “fun” for you means lots of variety, visible school spirit, and a livelier weekend scene, UMass Amherst has the edge. If your idea of fun is a smaller community where people know each other well and campus traditions carry a lot of the social life, William & Mary can still be a very enjoyable place, just in a less high-energy way.
