Is William & Mary or USC better for communications?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: USC offers a much more built-out, professionally oriented communications ecosystem, while William  Mary gives you a smaller, more traditional liberal arts setting with less of a communications industry pipeline. For communications specifically, USC has the clearer advantage because the field there is larger, more specialized, and more connected to media, entertainment, marketing, and Los Angeles-based internships. William  Mary can still work well, but it is not as known for communications as USC is.

At USC, communications benefits from a university environment that is unusually strong in media-adjacent areas like film, journalism, public relations, business, and digital storytelling. That matters because communications students often build careers through internships, student media, alumni connections, and cross-school opportunities, and USC is especially strong on those fronts. Being in Los Angeles also creates more access to semester-time internships and industry networking than Williamsburg does.

William  Mary is appealing if you want smaller classes, close faculty interaction, and a classic campus experience with strong academics overall. It can prepare students well for writing-heavy, analytical, and public-facing work, and motivated students can absolutely do well from there.

For job preparation, USC is usually the more practical choice in this major because communications is one of those fields where school-specific networks, hands-on experience, and geographic access can make a real difference. Unless you strongly prefer William  Marys scale, atmosphere, and broader liberal arts feel, USC is the better option for communications.
