Which has a stronger alumni network: William & Mary or the University of Michigan?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus closeness. Michigan has a much larger alumni base spread across more industries and cities, so it tends to create more opportunities for cold outreach, internships, and national job mobility. William & Mary’s network is smaller, but it has a real reputation for being unusually loyal and personally responsive, especially in fields where the school has long-standing strength and on the East Coast.

For internships and first jobs, Michigan usually has the edge in practice because its alumni presence is simply so broad. You are more likely to find graduates at major companies, in large metro areas, and across business, engineering, tech, consulting, finance, media, and public sector roles. That scale matters when you want multiple contacts at one employer or want to pivot industries later.

William & Mary’s network can feel warmer and more intentional, which students often value when they actually get someone on the phone. It is especially noticeable in government, law, education, policy, and certain East Coast professional circles. The school’s culture tends to produce alumni who identify strongly with the college, so the response rate to outreach can be very good even if the total number of alumni is much smaller.

For introductions after graduation, Michigan is usually more useful nationally and internationally because there are simply more alumni in more places. For mentorship and a tight-knit feel, William & Mary can punch above its size. Michigan offers more surface area; William & Mary often offers more intimacy.

If the question is which alumni network is stronger overall for practical career use, I would give that to the University of Michigan. If what you care about most is a smaller community where connections may feel more personal once made, William & Mary has a real advantage there, but Michigan is the more powerful network in sheer reach and career leverage.
