Which is better for undergraduate research: William & Mary or the University of Michigan?

The biggest tradeoff is scale versus access: Michigan offers a much larger research enterprise with more labs, institutes, funding streams, and disciplines, while William & Mary usually makes it easier for undergraduates to get direct faculty attention earlier. For a student who wants close mentorship and a campus culture built around undergrad involvement, William & Mary has a real advantage. For a student who wants the broadest possible menu of projects, especially in STEM, public health, engineering, or medicine-adjacent fields, Michigan has more sheer opportunity.

At William & Mary, undergraduate research is deeply woven into the academic culture because it does not have the same graduate-school scale that Michigan does in many areas. That often means fewer layers between you and the professor, and less competition from large numbers of PhD students for faculty time. Students there are especially well served if they want to do humanities, social science, or lab research in a setting where undergrads are central rather than peripheral.

Michigan is one of the country’s major research universities, so the upside is enormous. There are specialized labs, major centers, formal research programs, summer funding, and a lot of structured ways for students to plug in. The challenge is that such a large university can require more initiative to navigate, and in some departments early access may depend on how proactive you are about emailing faculty, joining programs, and building experience.

If your priority is ease of access, early involvement, and close faculty mentoring, I would lean toward William & Mary. If your priority is the largest and most varied research ecosystem, with especially strong options across STEM and professional-school-connected fields, Michigan comes out ahead.
