Should I choose Northeastern or Harvard for economics?

I’m trying to decide between Northeastern and Harvard for undergrad economics, and I’m stuck because both seem like strong options in different ways. I know Harvard has the bigger name, but Northeastern’s co-op system looks really practical for getting experience.

I’m mainly trying to figure out which choice makes more sense for an economics major who wants good career outcomes and solid opportunities during college.

For undergraduate economics, Harvard makes more sense for most students who want the strongest academic platform and the widest range of long-term options. If you think you may want grad school, consulting, finance, public policy, or research-heavy work, Harvard gives you more built-in momentum.

Harvard especially fits a student who wants economics treated as an intellectual discipline, not just a career tool. The name recognition also matters in economics-related fields where recruiting can be relationship-driven and prestige-sensitive, particularly early in your career.

Northeastern is more compelling for a student who values structured work experience during college and wants a very career-oriented undergraduate experience. Its co-op model is a real advantage if you learn best by alternating classroom study with full-time work, and that can make your resume look unusually developed by graduation. For someone focused on entering the workforce quickly with practical experience in business, analytics, or corporate roles, that setup is attractive.

You can absolutely do well from Northeastern, especially if you are proactive and use co-ops strategically, but Harvard opens more doors automatically and across more directions.

If cost is similar or manageable, Harvard is the clearer choice for economics. Northeastern becomes more persuasive mainly if its financial package is dramatically better or if you are certain you want a strongly work-integrated college experience rather than the broader academic reach Harvard offers.
