Wake Forest or University of Richmond for pre-med: which is better for med school preparation?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and medical infrastructure versus small-college access. Wake Forest gives you the resources and visibility of a university with a medical school and major health system attached to it, which can make research, clinical exposure, and physician connections easier to build. Richmond offers a more intimate undergraduate environment, with very small classes and close faculty contact, which can be excellent for teaching, recommendations, and individualized advising.

For pre-med specifically, Wake has a real edge because its undergraduate campus is tied to a major academic medical center. That matters because med school preparation is not just about biology and chemistry courses. It is also about finding research labs, shadowing, volunteering, and mentors who understand the medical admissions process firsthand.

Richmond is still a very solid option, especially if you know you thrive in a smaller, more personal academic setting. The school is known for strong faculty attention, and that can be valuable in foundational science classes and when it comes time to ask for detailed recommendation letters. The challenge is that Richmond does not have the same built-in medical ecosystem, so some clinical and research opportunities may require more initiative and off-campus coordination.

On advising, both can support pre-med students well, but Wake is better positioned for students who want a dense pre-health environment with more peers on the same path and more direct medical-school-adjacent resources. Richmond may feel more hands-on day to day, but Wake is likely to offer more breadth in the kinds of experiences med schools like to see.

If the question is strictly which school better prepares most students for medical school, I would lean Wake Forest. Richmond becomes the more compelling choice only if you are very confident that you will do noticeably better in a smaller, more personal liberal arts style setting.
