That can be especially valuable for PhD applications in the humanities, social sciences, and theoretical or interdisciplinary paths where close advising and polished writing matter a lot. Amherst also has strong cross-registration possibilities in the Five College Consortium, which broadens course access beyond a small-campus curriculum.

Amherst often gives a smoother path to the parts of graduate school prep that depend on mentoring, writing, and faculty advocacy. UCLA often gives a stronger platform for students who want the energy and infrastructure of a research powerhouse and are comfortable navigating a bigger system.
