Is University of Vermont or Temple better for city life?

Temple is the clearer choice for actual city life. It sits in North Philadelphia with direct access to SEPTA, so getting around by subway, bus, or regional rail is part of normal student life. Off campus, you are in a major city with dense neighborhoods, concerts, pro sports, museums, restaurants, and events available year-round in a way Burlington does not match.

Transportation is probably the biggest difference. At Temple, students can realistically live a day-to-day routine that involves public transit, quick trips into Center City, and easy access to different parts of Philadelphia without needing a car. At UVM, Burlington is walkable and pleasant, but it functions much more like a small city or large town, and the transit options and overall scale are much more limited.

The off-campus environment also feels very different. Temple students are plugged into a large urban setting where campus blends into the city, and there is far more going on beyond the university itself. UVM has good local restaurants, coffee shops, and community events around Burlington, especially near Church Street, but the scene is smaller, quieter, and more self-contained.

Daily life reflects that scale. At Temple, the city is part of your routine, with more spontaneity, more neighborhoods to explore, and more non-campus activity. At UVM, student life is active, but the surrounding environment feels less urban and more compact, with nature and the lake shaping the atmosphere as much as downtown does.
