University of Vermont vs Tulane for student life: which has the better campus social scene?

The biggest practical tradeoff is campus-centered community at UVM versus city-driven energy at Tulane. UVM’s social scene is more built around the campus itself, outdoor culture, student organizations, and house gatherings in Burlington, while Tulane’s social life is heavily shaped by New Orleans, with a much more off-campus, going-out oriented feel.

At UVM, students often describe the vibe as friendly, laid-back, and outdoorsy. It tends to be easy to meet people through dorm life, clubs, skiing and hiking culture, and smaller-scale weekend plans rather than constant big nightlife. Burlington helps a lot because it is a true college town with coffee shops, restaurants, and local events nearby, but the pace is still more relaxed than Tulane’s.

Tulane feels more socially intense and more extroverted in everyday life. The school is known for a strong weekend culture, frequent parties, and a campus atmosphere that spills directly into the surrounding city. Because it sits in New Orleans, students have access to live music, festivals, restaurants, and nightlife, so the social options can feel endless.

That said, the social scene at Tulane can also feel more image-conscious and more centered on going out, which not everyone enjoys. UVM is usually described as easiergoing and a little less status-oriented, so some students actually find it more comfortable and more genuine socially even if it is less high-energy.

For student life overall, Tulane has the more dynamic and visibly active social scene. UVM still offers a strong social environment, but it is better for someone who wants community, clubs, and a fun weekend life without the same level of party and city nightlife intensity.
