Is Notre Dame or NYU better for city life?

NYU is the clear pick for city life. Its campus is woven directly into Manhattan, centered around Greenwich Village, so daily student life happens on city streets, subways, neighborhood cafes, internships, and public spaces rather than inside a traditional enclosed campus. Notre Dame, by contrast, has a classic residential campus in South Bend with a much more self-contained feel.

At NYU, the city is part of the routine, not just something nearby. Students move between academic buildings spread through lower Manhattan, use public transit constantly, and have easy access to neighborhoods, museums, restaurants, performances, and jobs without needing a car or a separate trip off campus. That creates a day-to-day experience that feels unmistakably urban.

Notre Dame offers a very different rhythm. It is known for a strong campus community, residence hall culture, school traditions, and a walkable college environment where a lot of social life revolves around the university itself. South Bend does have things to do, but it does not shape student life the way New York shapes NYU.

The social atmosphere also feels different because of the setting. At NYU, independence comes quickly because students are navigating one of the biggest cities in the world from the start. At Notre Dame, the experience is more campus-centered, with a stronger sense that the university is its own community first and the surrounding city second.
