Is UC Berkeley or the University of Washington better for tech internships?

UC Berkeley has the edge for tech internships overall. Its location in the Bay Area puts students much closer to the biggest concentration of software, AI, fintech, and startup recruiting in the country, and Berkeley has an especially deep alumni network at major tech companies and early-stage firms. For internship access specifically, that combination tends to create more volume, more variety, and more opportunities during the school year, not just in the summer.

The biggest differentiator is proximity to the Bay Area ecosystem. Being near Oakland, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and a dense startup scene makes it easier to attend company events, do part-time internships during semesters, and build connections outside formal campus recruiting. A lot of students benefit from quick access to networking mixers, hackathons, founder circles, and referrals that are much harder to replicate when a campus is farther from that concentration of employers.

The second differentiator is recruiting depth. Washington is excellent here too, especially because Seattle has Amazon, Microsoft, and many strong tech employers nearby. But Berkeley tends to connect students to a broader spread of companies across big tech, startups, venture-backed firms, quantitative roles, and adjacent industries like product, data science, and applied AI. That matters because internship searches often work best when students can pursue many lanes at once rather than relying on a smaller cluster of dominant employers.

The last differentiator is brand reach in tech. Both schools are very respected, but Berkeley’s name carries unusual weight across the tech industry nationally, especially for engineering and computer science. That can help with recruiter attention, alumni responsiveness, and resume recognition in competitive applicant pools. Washington still offers outstanding internship outcomes, particularly for students who want to plug into Seattle tech, but Berkeley gives a slightly stronger overall platform for maximizing internship opportunities.
