Is NYU or Cornell better for biology undergrad?

Cornell has the edge for undergraduate biology. Its biology offerings are broader and more deeply built out at the undergrad level, with multiple departments and colleges involved in the life sciences, strong lab infrastructure, and easier access to field, plant, animal, and environmental biology alongside molecular and cellular work.

One big difference is the range within biology itself. At Cornell, biology is not just one urban premed-style pathway. You can study organismal biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, neurobiology and behavior, genetics, plant sciences, biomedical areas, and agricultural or environmental life sciences in a way that feels unusually expansive for undergrads. That matters if your interests shift once you start taking upper-level courses.

Research access is another important separator. Both schools offer research, but Cornell’s scale in the life sciences, combined with its campus labs, natural areas, and connections across biology-related departments, tends to create more varied hands-on options for undergraduates. For a student who wants lab work plus possibilities in field or interdisciplinary biological research, Cornell is especially strong.

The academic environment also feels different. Cornell’s biology ecosystem is more campus-centered, with a traditional residential undergraduate experience and a large concentration of STEM students and facilities in one place. NYU has real advantages, especially if you want the New York City setting, nearby medical and biotech opportunities, and a more urban daily life, but its biology experience is usually seen as less comprehensive than Cornell’s for undergrads.

For pure undergraduate biology strength, breadth, and depth, Cornell is the more compelling choice.
