Is Brown or NYU better for city life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that NYU is woven directly into New York City, while Brown gives you access to a smaller city but keeps much more of a traditional campus bubble. Day to day, NYU feels like city life is the campus itself: students use the subway, study in public spaces around Greenwich Village, and move through a neighborhood packed with restaurants, shops, internships, and events. Brown, by contrast, has a defined campus on College Hill, and Providence feels more adjacent to student life than inseparable from it.

If what you mean by “true city experience” is that the city shapes your routine every single day, NYU is the clearer answer. There is no real separation between school and city in the way there is at Brown. Even simple things like going to class, grabbing food, finding entertainment, or taking on part-time work tend to happen in the middle of the city rather than inside a contained campus environment.

Brown still offers urban access, but the vibe is very different. Providence is walkable, artsy, and has good food and culture for its size, yet it feels calmer and more manageable than New York. Many students like that balance because they get city amenities without the intensity, cost, and constant motion that come with NYU’s setting.

For someone who really prioritizes city energy outside of class, NYU will feel much more immersive. Brown can absolutely be a good option if you want some city life without giving up a classic campus feel, but for pure day-to-day urban experience, NYU is the one that stands out.
