Rice vs BU for city life: which campus feels more like living in a city?

BU feels much more like living in a city day to day. Its campus runs right along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, with city streets, shops, restaurants, apartment buildings, and public transit woven directly through student life. You can step off campus and immediately be in neighborhoods like Back Bay, Fenway, or Allston without a real transition.

Public transit is a big separator. At BU, the Green Line is right there, and walking to cafes, grocery stores, concert venues, museums, and internships is part of the normal routine. The campus itself does not feel enclosed or removed from the city, so the urban environment is constant rather than occasional.

Rice is in a major city, but the campus experience is much more self-contained. Rice has a traditional, green, residential campus next to the Museum District, Hermann Park, and the Texas Medical Center, so you do have strong access to interesting parts of Houston. But Houston is a far more car-dependent city, and Rice often feels like an oasis inside it rather than an extension of the city grid.

That means student life at Rice tends to be more centered on campus and nearby destinations, while BU students naturally spill into the city throughout the day. If what you want is the feeling that the city is your campus, BU matches that much more closely.
