Is UChicago or Penn better for accounting careers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Penn gives you a much more direct, employer-recognized path into accounting through Wharton, while UChicago is stronger as a broad economics and business-adjacent launchpad rather than an accounting-focused pipeline. For accounting recruiting, internship access, and CPA-oriented coursework, Penn is the clearer fit.

At Penn, the main advantage is structure. Wharton offers undergraduate coursework in accounting and a business curriculum that lines up more naturally with public accounting, audit, tax, and related roles. That matters not just for recruiting, but also for CPA preparation, because you are more likely to find classes and advising that map onto the educational requirements in a straightforward way.

UChicago can still work, especially if you are interested in accounting through economics, finance, or a broader quantitative business route. But it is not especially known as an undergraduate accounting destination, and the path is less built-out. You would likely need to be more intentional about selecting courses, confirming CPA eligibility by state, and positioning yourself for accounting-specific recruiting rather than relying on a deeply embedded undergraduate accounting ecosystem.

For internships, Penn also has an edge because of both Wharton’s brand in business recruiting and Philadelphia’s location between major East Coast job markets.

If your goal is specifically accounting jobs, Big Four recruiting, or the cleanest route toward the CPA, Penn is the better choice. UChicago makes more sense if you are still broadly interested in business or economics and want flexibility beyond accounting.
