UT Dallas vs NYU for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus cost: NYU puts you in the middle of the country’s largest finance recruiting market, while UT Dallas can be a much better value but does not offer the same built-in proximity to Wall Street firms. For finance specifically, location matters a lot because internships often turn into full-time offers, and NYU students can network, interview, and intern during the academic year far more easily. UT Dallas has solid business outcomes and strong connections in the Dallas corporate scene, but its pipeline is stronger for regional opportunities than for the most competitive New York finance tracks.

If your goal includes investment banking, high finance, or front-office roles at major banks, NYU is the clearer advantage. Stern has a long-established reputation in finance, deep alumni presence across banks and buy-side firms, and employers are very used to recruiting there. Being in Manhattan also makes informational interviews, part-time internships, and off-cycle opportunities much more realistic.

UT Dallas can still lead to good finance careers, especially in corporate finance, finance leadership programs, commercial banking, real estate, and roles tied to the Texas market. Dallas is a strong business city, and UTD students can absolutely build strong resumes there. But for the most competitive finance recruiting pipelines, you will usually need to be more proactive from UT Dallas, and there is less of the automatic employer attention that comes with NYU.

So in terms of recruiting and internships alone, NYU gives the better path for finance. The only major reason to choose UT Dallas over NYU for this goal is if the cost difference is large enough that avoiding heavy debt outweighs NYU’s recruiting edge, because finance outcomes are strongest when you can take advantage of networking and internship access without being crushed financially.
