Is UCLA or UC Berkeley better for math?

UC Berkeley has the edge for math. Its math department is more often viewed as one of the very top programs in the country, and Berkeley’s overall culture leans more intensely academic in core STEM fields. For an undergraduate who wants to be surrounded by a very deep math community, Berkeley usually stands out more.

One concrete difference is departmental reputation and breadth at the upper level. Berkeley is especially known for strength across pure math, applied math, and theoretical areas, and that shows up in the range of advanced courses, seminars, and faculty visibility in the field. Students interested in abstract or proof-heavy math often see Berkeley as the place with a slightly stronger intellectual pull.

Another difference is the academic atmosphere. Berkeley tends to feel more intense, more theory-oriented, and more centered on scholarship for its own sake, which matters if you want classmates who are excited about hard math beyond just major requirements. UCLA is absolutely strong, but its overall campus vibe is often described as a bit more balanced and less relentlessly academic than Berkeley’s.

Research access and mathematical community also help Berkeley here. Because math is such a central strength there, undergrads can benefit from a dense ecosystem of talks, advanced student groups, and connections to nearby academic activity in the Bay Area. UCLA still offers excellent opportunities and a very good math major, but when people compare the two specifically for math, Berkeley is usually the one that gets the nod.
