UT Austin vs Cal Poly for engineering: which is better for undergrad preparation?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools for engineering and keep seeing people mention that both are strong in different ways. I’m mainly interested in which one tends to give undergrads better hands-on preparation, industry readiness, and overall engineering experience.

I know they’re very different schools, so I’m trying to understand the general comparison before I commit to one.

For undergraduate engineering preparation, Cal Poly often stands out for hands-on training from the start, while UT Austin tends to offer a broader, more research-heavy engineering experience with excellent depth and name recognition. For industry readiness, both schools do well, but in slightly different ways. Cal Poly has a strong reputation with employers for producing engineers who can contribute quickly in applied settings. UT Austin places students into major companies at a high level as well, and its location, alumni network, and national visibility can be especially useful if you want access to large-scale recruiting pipelines.

If you care most about immediate, built-in hands-on undergraduate training, I’d lean Cal Poly. If you want a bigger engineering universe with more range, more research horsepower, and equally strong career outcomes, UT Austin is hard to beat. The real distinction is not quality so much as style of preparation: Cal Poly feels more consistently undergraduate-and-practice-centered, while UT Austin offers a wider platform with more ways to shape your engineering path.
