MIT vs Dartmouth for engineering: which is better for an undergraduate engineering student?

I’m a junior trying to figure out where I would fit better for engineering. Both schools seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure how they compare for an undergrad who wants a serious engineering education.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally the better choice for engineering students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and scale versus intimacy and flexibility. MIT is built around engineering, with far more departments, labs, course options, and a campus culture where technical work is central to daily life. Dartmouth offers a much smaller engineering environment, closer faculty access, and a broader liberal arts setting, but it does not match MIT’s range or intensity in undergraduate engineering.

For a student who wants the strongest overall undergraduate engineering experience, MIT is the clearer pick. The Thayer School is known for close-knit teaching and interdisciplinary thinking, and undergrads can get meaningful faculty attention earlier. That can be appealing if you want smaller classes, easier access to professors, and a campus where engineering is important but not the entire identity of the school.

One important detail is that Dartmouth’s engineering offerings are narrower. If you think you may want highly specialized subfields, a very large design-and-research ecosystem, or the most intense technical peer environment, MIT gives you more room. Dartmouth can work well for students interested in combining engineering with policy, economics, or other liberal arts areas, but for pure engineering depth it is not on the same level.

So if the question is which school is better for an undergraduate engineering student in a broad, academic sense, MIT has the advantage by a meaningful margin.
