Which feels more like a liberal arts college: Notre Dame or Bowdoin?

Bowdoin will feel much more like a classic liberal arts college. It is a small undergraduate-focused school, classes are typically taught by faculty rather than graduate students, and the overall academic culture is built around close discussion, advising, and a tight campus community. Notre Dame can still offer small classes and strong professor relationships, but it feels more like a midsize national university with a broader institutional scale and a more visible blend of undergraduate and research university life.

Bowdoin fits the student who wants academics to feel intimate almost by default. Because the college is smaller and centered on undergraduates, it is easier for class discussions, office hours, and casual faculty interaction to become a normal part of daily life rather than something you have to seek out strategically. The residential environment is also more compact, so campus culture tends to feel personal and interconnected.

Notre Dame makes sense for a student who wants some liberal arts elements inside a larger, more structured university setting. Its residential hall system creates a strong sense of community, and many students do build meaningful relationships with professors, especially in humanities and social science departments. But the overall atmosphere is still bigger, more tradition-heavy, and less purely liberal-arts in feel than Bowdoin.
