Is UMass Amherst or Ohio State more fun for undergrads?

Both can be very fun for undergrads, but the vibe is a little different. Ohio State tends to feel bigger, louder, and more nonstop because it sits in Columbus, and has the energy that comes with major Big Ten sports. UMass Amherst is lively too, especially on campus and in the Five College area, but it usually feels more contained and a bit less all-consuming than Ohio State.

Ohio State fits the student who wants weekends to feel busy almost by default. There are huge football game days, a very active student organization scene, lots of bars and restaurants nearby, and the advantage of being in a major city with concerts, internships, and off-campus events. For some students, that creates a classic high-energy college atmosphere where there is always something happening, even if you are not looking very hard.

UMass Amherst fits the student who likes a strong social scene but does not need it to revolve around a giant city or major sports culture every weekend. Amherst itself is a true college town, and the broader Five College Consortium adds more events, people, and cross-campus opportunities than you might expect. Students often like the mix of campus life, local restaurants, outdoor access, and nearby Northampton, which gives the social scene some variety without the scale of Columbus.

If “fun” for you means big crowds, school spirit, and a more constant buzz, Ohio State probably has the edge. If you want an active campus with plenty going on but a somewhat more manageable, college-town feel, UMass can be a really appealing version of fun.
