Is UMass Amherst or the University of Rochester better for neuroscience?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and both UMass Amherst and the University of Rochester are on it. I’m interested in neuroscience and want to compare them in terms of academic strength, research opportunities, and overall fit for someone planning to study brain science.

I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered stronger for neuroscience.

For neuroscience specifically, the University of Rochester is usually seen as the stronger academic option. At UMass, there may be plenty happening, but navigating a larger university often requires more self-direction and persistence.

In practical terms, Rochester is the place I’d look harder at if you want close faculty access, strong neuroscience identity, and a pathway that could lead toward PhD, MD, or neuro-research work. UMass Amherst belongs on the list if you want solid opportunities in a bigger, more traditional public-university setting, especially if cost or campus size could be major factors.
