University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Northwestern for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and scale versus flexibility and a smaller private-school environment. UIUC has one of the deepest undergraduate CS ecosystems in the country, with a huge CS course catalog, major recruiting presence from tech employers, and a very large peer community in computing. Northwestern gives you a more intimate setting, easier cross-school exploration, and strong access to interdisciplinary work, but its CS program is not as central or as expansive as UIUC’s.

For undergrad CS specifically, UIUC has the edge on pure program strength. Its CS department is exceptionally well known, the curriculum is broad and rigorous, and there are many advanced electives, research labs, student organizations, and project-based opportunities built around computing. For students who want to be surrounded by lots of serious CS majors, hackathons, startup activity, systems classes, theory, AI, and strong industry pipelines, UIUC is hard to beat.

Northwestern is still a very good place to study CS, especially if you want computer science combined with economics, design, journalism, music tech, cognitive science, or other interdisciplinary paths. The private-school setting often means smaller classes outside the biggest intro sequences and more direct faculty access, though this varies by course.

On recruiting, both schools can get you to top tech jobs, but UIUC has a particularly strong reputation with CS employers and a very large alumni presence in tech. That matters for internships, student networks, and the volume of campus opportunities. Northwestern students also place well, especially strong students who use the school’s resources aggressively, but UIUC is the more established CS destination in employers’ minds.

If the question is strictly which school is better for undergraduate computer science, I’d give that to UIUC. I’d lean Northwestern only if you strongly value the smaller private-school experience, want more flexibility outside a heavily CS-centered environment, or are specifically drawn to combining CS with another field in a more integrated way.
