Is UC Berkeley or UC Irvine better for admissions odds?

I’m trying to build a realistic college list and I keep seeing UC Berkeley and UC Irvine come up a lot. I know both are competitive, but I’m not sure which one is generally harder to get into for an average applicant.

I’m mostly trying to understand how their admissions odds compare in a broad sense so I can decide where to focus my energy.

UC Berkeley is typically harder to get into than UC Irvine, so for broad admissions odds, Irvine is the more attainable of the two. Berkeley draws an especially intense applicant pool, has a stronger national and international pull, and is often a reach even for very strong students. Irvine is still selective, but for many applicants it sits a step below Berkeley in difficulty.

The more useful way to think about it is by applicant type. If you are aiming for a school where top grades, rigorous coursework, and standout achievements are almost expected just to be seriously competitive, that is Berkeley. It tends to attract students with very high academic profiles and strong distinction in research, leadership, or other advanced pursuits.

Irvine makes more sense as the option for students who are still academically strong but want a realistic UC target or target-reach balance rather than an ultra-high bar. It is absolutely not a safety for most students, especially in popular majors, but it is usually the less difficult admit compared with Berkeley.

Major matters a lot at both schools. Computer science, engineering, business-related paths, and some bioscience areas can be much tougher than the campus overall, and that can narrow the gap somewhat. A student applying to a highly impacted program at Irvine may still face steeper odds than someone applying to a less crowded area at Berkeley, so campus-level comparisons are only a starting point.
